MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY DEGREE IN MEDICAL ULTRASOUND
MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY DEGREE IN MEDICAL ULTRASOUND
Master of Technology in Medical Ultrasound is advanced hands-on training for specialists who operate ultrasound machines to produce images of diagnostic value. We envisage that they will be able to write a report which can be used by physicians in the management of the patients. The programme is designed so that a qualified student will achieve international standards of training in Medical Ultrasound to cover the gap in the shortage of qualified competent ultrasonographers nationally and in the region. Upon completion, a candidate can be registered with the Allied Health Practitioner’s Council of Zimbabwe on the Specialist register. Students will be supported in developing their skills to become autonomous practitioners, who are able to undertake advanced practice, by ensuring clinical competencies are achieved to meet national and international standards. Students will have the opportunity for inter-professional learning, during clinical placement through the sharing of best clinical practices.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and application of fundamental physics in the clinical area.
- Formulate and use medical ultrasound scanning protocols to enhance patient management in line with local and internationally acceptable health delivery system standards
- Exhibit enhanced knowledge and understanding of the relevant anatomy, normal variants and pathology with their ultrasound appearances in the abdomen, small parts, obstetrics and gynaecology.
- Demonstrate practical skills to orientate relevant anatomy on the ultrasound equipment.
- Perform, interpret and report the appropriate clinical findings of ultrasound in accordance with international occupational standards and suggest urgent specialty referrals.
- Communicate findings and conclusions from the practice of diagnostic ultrasound to peers, colleagues and patients.
- Interpret findings from individualised patient ultrasound examination to determine the need for further investigations or suggest urgent speciality referrals and awareness of relevant local and national guidelines.
- Apply technopreneurial skills in ultrasound practice to create new business ventures based on knowledge and innovative paradigms
