In a vibrant display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) staff and students participated in the National Clean-Up Exercise on April 4, 2025. Launched by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa in 2018, this initiative aims to combat litter and promote cleanliness nationwide.
Staff and students of HIT gathered early in the morning, equipped with gloves, refuse bags, and brooms, ready to tackle waste around their campus. The clean-up exercise focused not only on beautifying the institute’s grounds but also on raising awareness about sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The event concluded with a brief address from the Vice Chancellor, who emphasized the importance of maintaining clean surroundings and the role of educational institutions in championing such efforts. “As future leaders and innovators, we must set an example in preserving our environment,” he stated.
Participants spread out across various sections of the campus, collecting litter and engaging in discussions about sustainable practices. “This exercise is not just about cleaning; it’s about fostering a culture of responsibility towards our environment,” said an enthusiastic academic from the Polymer Technology and Engineering department.
The clean-up initiative is expected to inspire similar activities in other institutions and communities across the country, reinforcing the message of unity in pursuing a cleaner, greener Zimbabwe.
