A delegation from the Zimbabwe National Defence University (ZNDU), participating in the National Defence Course 13/2024, undertook a significant study visit to the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) on 15 November 2024, aimed at underscoring the crucial role of scientific innovation in Zimbabwe’s industrial and technological progress.
Led by Brigadier General L. Ngwenya, the course’s Term Senior Directing Officer, the visiting delegation sought to deepen their understanding of how technological advancements can contribute to national development strategies. General Ngwenya stated, “This visit provides an essential opportunity for our participants to appreciate the transformative power of science and technology in enhancing our country’s industrial capabilities.”
On arrival, the delegation was welcomed by Mrs R. Chikoore, the Dean of the School of Information Science and Technology, who represented HIT’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Eng. Q.C. Kanhukamwe. Mrs Chikoore provided an overview of HIT’s mission and vision, emphasising the Institute’s commitment to fostering innovation in various sectors.
The highlight of the visit was a presentation by Engineer L. Masiyazi, Director of the Technology Transfer Licensing and Commercialisation Centre (TTLCC). She elaborated on HIT’s innovative initiatives and its efforts in promoting the commercialisation of research outputs, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical innovation and practical application in industries. “Our thrust is to ensure that the innovations developed here are not just academic exercises but are translated into real-world solutions that can spur economic growth,” Eng Masiyazi articulated.
As part of their exploratory mission, the delegation toured the institute’s state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops, gaining firsthand experience of cutting-edge research. They also visited the expansive library, where participants were introduced to various resource materials that support innovation and development.
A key tour aspect included visits to several start-ups and spin-offs launched from the Innovation Hub at HIT. These ventures exemplify the Institute’s role in nurturing technopreneurial initiatives that harness technology for community and national benefits.
The visit concluded with an open discussion, where course participants engaged with faculty about the challenges and opportunities facing technological development in Zimbabwe. General Ngwenya reiterated the importance of integrating scientific research into defence and security strategies, asserting that “understanding emerging technologies is pivotal for the future of national security.”
As the delegation departed, it was clear that the insights gained from the Harare Institute of Technology would enrich the attendees’ knowledge and inform future policies to leverage scientific innovation for Zimbabwe’s development.
