The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) launched its much-anticipated Technovation Expo 2024 on September 3, marking the beginning of a five-day celebration of innovation at its campus. Under the theme “Beyond Disruptive Innovation,” the expo serves as a prominent platform for showcasing cutting-edge research, technological advancements, and entrepreneurial endeavours in Zimbabwe.
The event, which runs until September 7, features a diverse lineup of activities, including public lectures, symposiums, a technopreneurship business plan competition, and exhibitions spotlighting start-ups and innovations poised to contribute to the country’s industrialisation. HIT’s Communications, Advancement, and International Relations Director, Mr. Tinashe Mutema, emphasised that this year’s expo aims to illustrate how the institution has integrated Education 5.0 into its curriculum while providing valuable networking opportunities within the Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) sectors.
“This expo is a perfect opportunity to network, create synergies, and enhance brand visibility,” said Mr. Mutema. He also highlighted the expo’s role in promoting future careers and enhancing technopreneurial literacy.
Kicking off alongside the expo, the First International Conference on E-Business Practice, Research, and Innovation addressed the challenges posed by rapid digitalization. Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission Chairperson Mr. Michael Reza urged for urgent reforms to tackle rising cyber-security threats, including financial crimes facilitated by digital technologies.
“Our laws are overdue for review to keep pace with the evolution of technology and the emerging threats it poses,” remarked Mr. Reza. He pointed out that effective legislation must adapt to ensure the country’s financial systems remain secure amidst increasing cyber risks.
HIT Vice Chancellor Professor Eng. Q.C Kanhukamwe echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of innovation in navigating the complexities of the digital economy. He encouraged participants to seek sustainable solutions that can bolster Zimbabwe’s economic landscape in the wake of significant global shifts.
“This conference could not have come at a more crucial time,” said Prof. Kanhukamwe. “Our mandate is to develop, incubate, transfer, and commercialize technology that addresses societal challenges and catalyzes economic development.”
The expo’s theme, “Beyond Disruptive Innovation,” reflects HIT’s commitment to not only foster innovation but also to create transformative and sustainable technological solutions, empowering students and faculty to lead in the evolving digital economy.
As the event progresses, guests can look forward to some inciting conferences and symposiums from the university’s schools as well as exploring a variety of start-ups and spin-offs on display, all geared towards driving technological progress and contributing to a prosperous future for Zimbabwe.
The Technovation Expo 2024 will be officially opened on Friday, September 6, with an inaugural professorial public lecture delivered by the HIT Vice Chancellor Prof. Engr. Q.C. Kanhukamwe. His lecture will focus on the “Role of Universities in Establishing a SET/4IR-Driven Economy.”
The Expo will culminate on Saturday, September 7, with an engaging Family Fun Day Marathon, featuring activities centered around wellness and gastronomy.
