HIT Students Attend the Zimbabwe International Research Symposium

Harare Institute of Technology students participated in the 12th Zimbabwe International Research Symposium (ZIRS) at the Rainbow Towers in the country’s capital held from the 13 - 15 of February 2019 under the theme “The Nexus between Research Industry: Key to Innovation and Sustainable Development Research Council of Zimbabwe.

The Symposium was organised by the Zimbabwe Research Council (ZRC) and it featured local and international scientific researchers and diplomats as well as representatives from government and non-governmental organizations, industry, commerce and civic society.

The Zimbabwe International Research Symposium (ZIRS) 2019 was officially opened by H.E President Emmerson Mnangagwa who assured the delegates of his government’s commitment to continually support research and innovation through allocation of one percent of GDP towards research as already evidenced by the 0.3 percent allocated in the 2019 budget.

The President also called for reserach efforts across all sectors of the economy to make substantial and vital contribution to the development of the country in order to be meaningful. This is in view of his government’s development agenda “Vision 2030” which seeks to usher Zimbabwe into becoming a middle income economy by the year 20130, through industrialisation, modernization and economic development.

Mr. Aamir Butt, Chief Executive Officer of Lancor Scientific Limited and Tumour Trace Limited (UK) was the guest of honour spoke at length on the Science of Entrepreneurship as he delivered a power-packed presentation during a highly interactive session providing insights into the practical aspects of entrepreneurship and its dynamics. 

The HIT students had a rare opportunity to learn from other researchers and network with various diplomats and researchers as well as making and pitching their academic presentations and research projects. The students were drawn from various departments including Software Engineering, Chemical and Processes Systems Engineering, Food Processing Technology, Industrial and manufacturing Engineering, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, and Electronic Engineering.
